MUNISING — The Munising Trout & Salmon Classic is officially set to return to the waters of Lake Superior on May 16-17, bringing anglers from across the region together for one of the Upper Peninsula’s premier fishing tournaments. Sponsored by the Munising Visitors Bureau and hosted by the Munising City Volunteer Fire Department, this long-standing event continues its tradition of competitive fishing, community engagement and fundraising in support of local emergency fire services.

With a history spanning more than three decades, the Munising Trout & Salmon Classic remains a cornerstone event for anglers and the community alike. Since 2013, the Munising City Volunteer Fire Department has hosted the event as its main annual fundraiser, with all proceeds going to purchase necessary equipment and support department operations. The classic also features a fish fry open to the public by donation on Saturday, May 16.

“Part of what makes the Classic unlike other fishing tournaments is the fish fry on Saturday,” said Brock Anderson, Tournament Control Committee and MCFD hose captain. “We’re lucky to have dedicated volunteers who clean fish for us year-after-year, making it easy for the fisherman to sit back and enjoy the weigh-ins.”

This year, the classic will have increased payouts of $2,500 for first place in the Trout and Salmon divisions. The classic has also upped event production. “We’re excited to try something different this year, with live leaderboards updating during weigh-ins,” said Jason Klich, Tournament Control Committee and MCFD Safety Officer. “The Classic has been around for 30 years, and we’re proud to keep the tradition going.”

The tournament weekend will kick off with the Captain’s Meeting on Friday, May 15, held at the American Legion Post 131, which will again serve as tournament headquarters for registration, weigh-ins and festivities. Anglers may register by visiting fishmunising.com. Advanced registration is encouraged to secure a boat slip in the marina, with last-chance registration at the Captain’s Meeting.

“We appreciate and look forward to the continued support of our participants, sponsors, and community members who make this event possible each year,” said Chief Red Anderson. “The Classic is not only a premier fishing event on Lake Superior, but also an important fundraiser that directly supports the men and women of our fire department. We’re excited to welcome everyone back in 2026.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
