NEGAUNEE – Today’s spring storm broke the record for all-time snowiest winter in Marquette County. “It’s official. We broke the record,” said meteorologist Greg Forrester with the National Weather Service in Negaunee Township. “It’s the snowiest we know of – of any weather records in Marquette County.” At 10:15 a.m., the official seasonal snowfall at the Marquette County Airport was 244.7 inches, breaking the record of 243.8 inches set during the winter of 1981-1982. “The snowfall this morning is running about three quarters of an inch per hour,” Forrester said at 10:40 a.m. Since midnight, more than 6.5 inches of snow had fallen. The weather service started collecting snow records in downtown Marquette in 1871 and moved to the airport in February 1979. No celebrations were planned at the weather service, although employees are always interested in new records, Forrester said.
