MARQUETTE – The greenbacks in John Peterson’s hand were crisp and clean and they grabbed the attention of the student body Tuesday morning at the Marquette Senior High School gymnasium. Peterson, the assistant high school principal, officially kicked off the Redmen Renaissance program. The $35 he carried was one of many rewards bestowed upon students who have exhibited excellence or improvement in grades and attendance. Throughout the day, 813 of the school’s 1,500 student body were rewarded. The program is intended to encourage academic achievement and good attendance through positive reinforcement. One of the program’s administrators, music teacher Janis Norton, said she wasn’t a believer in the project at first. However, she was impressed when she saw the success of a similar merit program at Graveraet Middle School.

MARQUETTE COUNTY – Marquette County’s teen-age population, growing rapidly in size and in affluence, is having a profound effect on the economy. It has developed into an important consumer group, with an economic power greater than it ever wielded before. An estimated $3,519,000 a year is being spent by them for pop records, beauty supplies, radios, greeting cards, snacks, paperbacks, entertainment and for their many other needs and wants.
