MARQUETTE – K.L. Cool rock-and-rolled into the Upper Peninsula Tuesday and brought with him a new old friend. Sporting a Snoopy tie, a duck hunting pin and a boom box used for an earlier employee presentation, the new director of the Department of Natural Resources said his first goal is to “stabilize leadership” within the DNR. He then announced he had enticed retired DNR Deputy Director Frank Opolka to return to the post to help guide the DNR’s U.P. policy as the agency moves into the next century.

MARQUETTE – Members of Michigan Tech’s Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity proved Saturday that (1) they’re in good physical condition and that (2) “college stunts” can have a worthwhile purpose. Fifty-eight of them took turns pulling a sled 100 miles from Houghton to Marquette, making the run in about 16 hours. They left the Copper Country and 11 Friday night, arriving at the Northern University campus shortly after 3 p.m. on Saturday. Stops were made in Ishpeming and Negaunee, where residents noted that the sled carried a sign promoting the Michigan Heart Association research fund. Cooperating in the venture were state police, sheriff’s officers of Houghton, Baraga, and Marquette counties and city and village police who provided escorts for the runners all along the way.

Starting at $3.23/week.
