Iron boat docks in Marquette

The lake freighter Lee A. Tregurtha docked Sunday morning at Marquette's Upper Harbor (Presque Isle) ore dock. With a distinguished history that dates back to World War II, the Tregurtha is a favorite of boat watchers. Originally built as the Chiwawa, she earned two battle stars for war service as a tanker and was present in Tokyo Bay during the September 2, 1945, surrender ceremony. The ship was later purchased by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and converted to Great Lakes use. When CCI sold its fleet in 1985, the ship joined the Ford Motor (later Rouge Steel) fleet and was renamed William Clay Ford (2). In 1989, the ship joined the Interlake Steamship family as part of Lakes Shipping Company, Inc. She was renamed Lee A. Tregurtha in honor of the wife of Interlake’s vice chairman.
