HOUGHTON — The restoration of Michigan Technological University’s historic Lambda Chi Alpha house has earned a 2026 Build Michigan Award, with Iron Mountain-based Gundlach Champion recognized for one of the state’s top construction projects.

After a 2022 fire destroyed the roof and left the rest of the building heavily damaged by smoke and water, the team stabilized the structure, restored defining architectural features and integrated modern systems while preserving the home’s historic character.

More than 35 local subcontractors and suppliers contributed to the effort, which speaks to the depth of skilled trades expertise found across the Upper Peninsula. Beyond the award, the project returned a prominent piece of Houghton’s architectural heritage to active use for Michigan Tech University students.
