MARQUETTE – What used to be the traditional “summer session” at Northern Michigan University is now Summer College, a full-fledged semester with a new approach to scheduling courses that university officials sat will better serve student needs. Enrollment opens Monday, March 25. According to Dr. David Prior, dean of Graduate Studies and Research, the goal is “to develop a summer curriculum that–with those of fall and winter–will provide year-round academic continuity–a 12-month university environment. We want to help students better utilize the Summer Semester in their academic planning.” One of the biggest changes in the new Summer College is that courses are scheduled around four time blocks–two in the morning and two in the afternoon, with one evening course. Fenske said that key courses will be distributed across all time blocks. “In the past, too many of these courses were held at one time, making it difficult if not impossible for students to enroll in all the courses they wanted to take.” Morning courses will be held during time blocks beginning at 7:30 and 9:50 a.m., and 2:50 p.m. Evening courses will start at varying times beginning at 5:30 p.m.
