SKANDIA – You can keep “The Hokey Pokey” as far the second graders in Nina Olsen’s class at Skandia Elementary School are concerned. The top song on their dance chart is the “Don’t Be Lazy Song,” an energetic ditty they learned Monday during a “March is Nutrition Month” program. “I used to be lazy but now I’m not,” confided Susan Maki as she and her classmates jumped, shook, and marched along to the beat. The Skandia second grade is one of the classrooms adopted locally by Weight Watchers to teach better nutritional habits. The other participating classrooms are the second and third grades at Cherry Creek Elementary in Marquette. “We want these kids at an early age to learn how to eat properly, and we hope their parents will get involved too,” said Sarah Kimball, public relations director for Weight Watchers. In the three-week program called “Journey to the Health Zone,” the children learn about the food pyramid and what healthy eating entails, find out about the importance of exercise, and discover that snacks can be healthy. So on Monday, Patti Heller — who is an exercise motivator — accompanied Kimball to the classroom. Heller surveyed the students and discovered that their favorite exercises included swimming, running, biking, and pushups. Soon, Heller had the students and their teacher around her in a circle, moving to the catchy beat of the “Don’t Be Lazy” song. The kids were all smiles as they counted to eight and followed the instructions in the song.

MUNISING – The Munising Business and Professional Women’s Club celebrated its 35th anniversary at an evening meeting held recently in the American Legion club rooms. Charter members honored at that time were Miss Johanna Genry, Mrs. Alma Peterson, Mrs. Mildred Ruggles, Mrs. Alene Nebel, Miss Ruth Kemp and Miss Freida Schwartz. The table decorations featured seven orchid tulip plants. In the heart of the tulip bud in each of the six plants was a picture of a charter member, the picture having been taken about ten years ago. In the bud of the seventh tulip plant was a picture of the present president, Mrs. Shirley Olson. Mrs. Hazel Karl of Powers district sales manager for a cosmetic house, presented a film entitled “Lessons in Loveliness,” using Miss Mary Alice Mahalic, Alger County’s Snowmobile Queen, as a model to demonstrate the correct method of applying make-up.
