MARQUETTE – Additional funds for Peter White Public Library is included on a busy agenda for tonight’s meeting of the Marquette City Commission. The commission meets at 7 p.m. in commission chambers of city hall. The commissioners will consider a request from the Peter White Public Library Board to Place a ½-mill property tax levy request on the Aug. 6 primary for capital improvements to the library. The board also requested a commitment from the city to levy an additional 1-mill on property if the 6 ballot request is successful, for a total increase of 1.5 mills. The revenue would be used to fund one-half of a $9-million library expansion and renovation. The library board proposes to fund the other half of the cost through private donations. Commissioners are also scheduled to consider a $3.96 million contract with Yalmer Mattila Contracting, Inc. of Houghton for the construction of a water plant to house the city’s new microfiltration system. To finance the microfiltration plant, commissioners will consider the issuance of bonds and an increase in water and sewer rates. Other items on the agenda include: a public hearing regarding the special assessment project to replace a water main at 1103 and 1107 Northrop St., a review of bids for the purchase of a fire hose, and a review of bids for purchase and planting of city trees.

MARQUETTE – Whether the Marquette Iron Rangers win the USHL title or not depends a great deal on young Brian Lunney, top net-minder in the league. The Winnipeg flash will be called on to stop Fox Valley’s hustling skaters in a weekend set, then face Green Bay here on March 23 in a makeup game. If the Iron Rangers can win all three they will be in a good position to overcome Waterloo in the final four games of the season. The Black Hawks, currently riding along in first place with 34 points, will face St. Paul this weekend on their home ice. A double loss to Waterloo would tighten the race up considerably. Marquette has seven games left which could give them 14 points before the regular season ends. Added to the 28 they have already accumulated, would be good for the league title with Waterloo the only possible stumbling block. Now, Lunney, the Canadian net-minder has done a great job despite all the publicity given to last year’s goalie, Bruce Gamble. Coach (Oakie) Brumm felt the same way as Foster Hewitt, Toronto radio announcer, when Hewitt said, “Gamble is good when he wants to be.” Gamble played well here but failed to get the Iron Rangers in the playoffs as the locals dropped a pair to Waterloo and missed by a few percentage points. Brumm said the team is at full strength for the Dundee invasion and looks forward to a double victory. “The boys are getting hungry again and will be hard to stop from here on in,” he said. Bill Masterton of St. Paul has a commanding lead in USHL scoring as he leads Paul Johnson of Waterloo. 57-47. Bob Cox and Wayne McCuaig of the Iron Rangers have 41 and 38 points, respectively.

Starting at $3.23/week.
