MARQUETTE – There may still be snow on the ground, but the Red Cross is heating up for Red Cross Month this March. The local Red Cross is looking for those who want to take a break from shoveling and get into the swim and heat if it in the sixth annual American Red Cross Swim-A-Cross. This year any water activity is permitted! Swimming, water aerobics, hot tubbing–it all counts toward your pledges in this year’s local Red Cross Fundraiser. Area facilities participating include the Westwood, Ishpeming and Marquette high schools, the Holiday Inn, and NMU’s PEIF building. Can you gather pledges, and donate to the organization that has been providing programs and services in Marquette County for 80 years? Call 229-3659 for more information.

MARQUETTE – “Avoid the spring rush and register your bicycles now”–that was the advice today from city police to Marquette youngsters. Registration of bicycles is underway and will be conducted weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 a.m. at the Marquette police station. Traffic Sgt. Michael Dooley advised “bike” owners that they cannot obtain licenses this year on Saturday and Sunday, as was possible in previous years. He said a youngster applying for a 1966 bicycle license need not take his bike to the station but must know its serial number. Those who obtained licenses last year may show their registration slips. The fee for bicycle licenses remains at 35 cents, Dooley said. He pointed out that 2,500 bikes were registered in Marquette last year, with 1,000 licenses being issued in a single day. This year, a two or three day registration drive again is slated, but it will not be held for some time. In the meantime, Dooley said police would like to see 500 or so bicycles registered early, to prevent an onslaught on the station when spring arrives.
