HOUGHTON — Superior Fab Lab, a local 501(c)(3) non-profit maker space in Houghton, announced the return of the Superior MakerFest. This will be the event’s fourth consecutive year. This year’s festival will take place today, dubbed “Pi Day” due to the date (3.14) being the same as the number pi (3.14…). The event is being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Houghton High School.

“The Superior MakerFest is the Copper Country’s premier celebration of the “Maker Movement,” bringing together hobbyists, engineers, artists, and students to showcase their hands-on creations,” said a statement released by Superior Fab Lab.

Superior Fab Lab describes themselves as being “dedicated to fostering a culture of making,” and states that “the lab provides the community with access to tools, technology, and knowledge to turn ideas into reality. Through workshops, events, and community collaboration, Superior Fab Lab empowers the next generation of problem-solvers in the Copper Country.”

“This year’s MakerFest is more than an event; it’s a celebration of the infinite possibilities that emerge when creativity and community collide,” says Superior Fab Lab member Jason Mack. “By holding MakerFest on PI Day, we’re highlighting the perfect circle of STEM, art, and innovation. We are thrilled to bring the Copper Country community together yet again for an immersive experience.”

Event highlights include a “Featured Makers” exhibit in the Houghton High School Gym, where attendees can explore interactive booths featuring everything from high-tech robotics to traditional crafts.

There will also be maker competitions, in which local creators will compete in categories including metal, plastics, textiles, electronics, wood, and a dedicated youth category for makers under the age of 13. Attendees of all ages will also have the opportunity to connect with local STEM clubs and participate in live demonstrations, and the event will feature food options from local food vendors.

“I brought my kids thinking we’d stay for an hour, and we ended up staying until the doors closed,” says Sarah J., a local parent and past attendee. “Seeing my daughter’s face light up when she realized she could actually build the technology she uses every day was incredible.”

Registration is now open to participate in this year’s MakerFest, whether as a competitor, featured maker, or volunteer.
