MARQUETTE – Marquette County’s job market has not been able to absorb all of the former civilian workers from Sawyer Air Force Base, forcing many to change careers, seek retraining, or move from the area, a Mining Journal study found. Only 28% (62) of the 223 civilian workers who sought state job retraining and referrals have found work locally, said Gwen Wood chief of operations of the Michigan Works.
