SAWYER AIR FORCE BASE – The seasonal shutdown has idled workers at Marplex, Inc. one of the first companies to sign a civilian lease at Sawyer Air Force Base. The company closed its door for the winter in late December, said Marplex secretary -Treasurer Donald Swanson of Escanaba. Marplex employees about 16 people.

MARQUETTE – Ice in Marquette’s harbor here is in nine inches thick. Although Marquette’s waterfront workers have estimated the ice in the harbor as being 20 inches thick, the official summary of conditions on Lake Superior, issued by the branch of the hydrographic office in Duluth, places the thickness at nine inches.
