MARQUETTE – The Upper Peninsula’s unemployment rate edged upward to 8 percent in December, .4 percent above the November rate of 7.6 percent. The December 1994 rate was 6.8 percent. However, the monthly declines were offset by job gains in general merchandise stores and retail trade. After the end of November’s firearm deer season, employment in lumber and wood manufacturing increased. A boost in employment was recorded at area ski hills and other winter tourism places.
