Multiple accidents force closure of M-28

MARQUETTE — The Alger County Sheriff’s Department announced Friday afternoon that highway M-28 between Munising and Harvey has been closed for an indeterminate amount of time.

“Due to whiteout conditions and multiple vehicle crashes, M-28 east and west between Munising and U.S. 41 is closed. Please stay off the road,” an Alger Sheriff’s Facebook post said that was posted at about 2:30 p.m.

A similar post was placed on Facebook by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department at about the same time.

“East M-28 from Kawbawgam Road to Munising will be closed due to whiteout conditions and multiple accidents. Detour is U.S. 41 South to East (on) M-94,” the Marquette Sheriff’s post states.

The Eighth District of the Michigan State Police out of the Negaunee post also released a statement on the social platform X.

“M-28 is temporarily closed between U.S. 41 (Harvey) and M-94 (Munising),” said the state police posting. “Traffic is being redirected. Please use alternate routes as needed. Multiple crashes and bad road conditions have been reported.”

None of these agencies reported on how many accidents occurred or whether there were any injuries as of Friday midafternoon.

“(Eastbound and westbound) M-28 between U.S. 41 and M-94 roadway (is) closed due to a crash (in) Alger and Marquette counties,” the Michigan Department of Transportation also reported on X.

Munising Public Schools closed its schools before the day began due to reports that “due to reduced visibility and drifting (snow) on and near M-28 resulting in hazardous travel conditions,” according to a Facebook from the district Friday morning.

“… (S)ections of M-28 between Munising and Au Train are becoming unsafe as there is already an accident between G.I. Landing and Christmas with the sheriff’s department on the scene.”
