ESCANABA — On Saturday morning at approximately 10:54 a.m., the Escanaba Department of Public Safety was called to a residence in Wells Township for a report of a structure fire with a child trapped inside. While en route to the call, Central Dispatch was able to confirm that it was a dog trapped inside the structure, not a child.
“Upon arrival, heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the south side entrance door as well as smoke coming from the eves,” said an Escanaba Department of Public Safety Press Release. “An interior attack was made, the fire was located in the kitchen of the residence and quickly brought under control.”
Unfortunately, the dog trapped in the house did not survive the fire. Additionally, the house suffered major smoke and water damage. The detached garage also suffered some damage, as the siding was partially melted due to the heat from the flames.
Public Safety was assisted by Ford River Township Fire Department, Escanaba Township Fire Department, DTE Energy, Upper Peninsula Power Company, Delta County Central Dispatch, Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Delta County Road Commission and the Red Cross.
“Public Safety would also like to extend its condolences to the family for the loss of the family dog,” said the Escanaba Department of Public Safety.
