Event to focus on human trafficking

MARQUETTE — Human Trafficking (exploitation for profit) happens online, at our schools, at local sporting events, and even in our neighborhood at parties. Traffickers target our most vulnerable people, especially teens.

Predators lurk online, waiting for the right time to come in a pose as a friend. However, their intentions are nefarious. They are professional cons that anybody can fall prey to.

An open invitation is extended to the public, encouraging parents and teens to watch a new film about human trafficking titled, “Ring of Silence.” The free event will take place at the Ojibwa Casino in Marquette on Thursday. A food reception kicks-off at 5:30 p.m. with movie showtime at 6 p.m.

“The Ring of Silence” is based on real events that happened to teens in a Michigan high school. This film is rated for PG-13 audiences so they can understand that the perpetrators look like attractive young men and women in their school, like the kid on Instagram or Snapchat, or even like the guy next door.

The Women’s Center in Marquette, who provides emergency shelter and support to victims of sexual violence, is this year’s co-sponsor for the event.

Hannah Holma, LLMSW program director, warns that “Human trafficking is not a distant issue or someone else’s problem. It is happening in our community, often hidden in plain sight. Understanding what human trafficking looks like is a critical first step in to protect those at risk. Awareness is one of our strongest tools to recognize the signs, respond safely, and support survivors.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
