ISHPEMING – A new film on the history of skiing in Michigan, including a segment on Ishpeming’s ski-jumping legacy, will air at 8 tonight on WNMU Public TV 13. In the 90-minute program titled “Winter Wonderland,” Traverse City based independent filmmaker Bill Jamerson examines the origins of skiing in the U.P. The program contains historic footage of the building of the Pine Mountain Ski Jump in Iron Mountain and early ski jumping days in Ishpeming. It also features interviews with numerous well-known Ishpeming ski jumpers, including former Olympian Paul Bietila and former national champion Coy Hill.

MUNISING – The national reemployment service office here today reported placement of 620 men on federal projects and in private industry during the 45-day period from October 15 to November 20. Of the total, 144 were certified relief employables and the remaining 476 were taken from the non-relief unemployed ranks. Alger county now has two grade construction projects and one grade separation project on which 469 men have been placed. There is also one bridge construction project on which 13 men have been placed who were not on relief. In the central and eastern section, three grade construction and surfacing projects under WPA supervision have placed 88 men, all taken from certified relief lists. Fifty men and women were placed in public and private industry. The primary objective of the WPA is to transfer every eligible employable from direct relief dole to employment. Continued effort is being made toward the employment of those on registered unemployment rolls. This service is provided free of charge to employer and employee.
