MARQUETTE – U.S. Olympic Education Center (USOEC) short track speed skating coach Jeroen Otter is expecting records to fall this weekend during the U.S. Speed Skating traveling team trials at Northern Michigan University’s newly-renovated PEIF arena. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see several records broken,” said Otter, who is also the U.S. national coach. “We have world class ice, and it’s fast ice.” The PEIF arena, training site of the USOEC team, was recently expanded to the size of an international ice surface of 20,000 square feet. America’s top short track speedskaters will compete to represent the United States in international events. Competition starts at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and resumes at 11 a.m. Sunday. USOEC skaters in the men’s trials are Tony Godkowicz, John Schilling, Kip Carpenter, Mike Kooreman, Tom O’Hare, Todd Porter, Chad Powell, Joe Rohraff, and Scott Simunjak. Women USOEC skaters are Karen Cashman, Erin Gleason, Julie Goskowicz, Whitney McGill, and Kelly O’Hare.

MARQUETTE – A convention of Great Lakes carriers occurred in Marquette yesterday, as six boats waited their turns to take on ore. The carriers – four in the upper harbor at Presque Isle and two in the lower harbor (downtown) – were joined by a pair of tankers unloading oil at the Murphy Oil Corp.’s dock at Presque Isle. The ships arrived in Marquette about the same time, since all sought cover during recent gale warnings. The Ford Motor Co.’s Henry Ford II and Benson Ford were loading at the Soo Line dock in the lower harbor. Ships at Presque Isle were: the William G. Mather, the Champlain, the E.B. Greene (all Cliffs carriers); the American Oil Co. tanker, Indiana; Republic Steel Corp.’s Valley Camp; and the Cleveland tanker, Rocket. Loading of the carriers was slow since the ore is frozen and must go through the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad Co.’s thawing house before being dumped into dock pockets for delivery to the boats. The shipping season in Marquette is expected to continue another 10 days, closing about the same time as last year.

Starting at $3.23/week.
