MUNISING – On Thanksgiving Day, a one hour radio program will be broadcast out of Chicago on the history of the Munising area as described in Loren Graham’s new book: “A Face in the Rock: The Tale of a Grand Island Chippewa.” Recalled by a New York Times book reviewer to be “richly entertaining,” Graham’s book covers a 40 year period in the Munising area, with past and present residents being the subjects of interest. Dolores LeVeque is a featured person in the book, and happens to be a descendent of the books hero, a Chippewa warrior named Powers of the Air. Powers of the Air was the source of several legends which found their way into Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem titled “Hiawatha.” LeVeque and other descendants of Powers of the Air have continued to live in the Munising area up to the present day. Tune into the interview with Loren Graham in the 9 to 11 p.m. time slot!

MARQUETTE – Construction of snow fencing for the state highway department and for some of the county road organizations in the upper peninsula is providing labor for a number of inmates in the Marquette prison since the closing, this week, of the prison’s sawmill, it was stated yesterday by Warden Walter F. Gries. Before the mill was shut down, most of the stock of lumber on hand had been used, but enough was retained to fill orders for snow fence. About 35 miles of fencing are being turned out for the state highway department and orders have been received from two counties. The snow fence orders to date have required the making of about 400,000 wooden pickets.

Starting at $3.23/week.
