MUNISING – Grant Peterson, superintendent of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, is well aware of the risks of promoting the U.P. for tourists, but, he says, “It is important to balance attracting visitors to historic, cultural, and natural resources with preservation in mind.” Petersen was presented with a U.P. Gold Award by the Upper Peninsula Travel and Recreation Association for his efforts to promote the U.P. A native of Illinois, Petersen has been in the National Park Service for over 30 years, and says his award is a result of his partnership with many different groups and individuals to make changes. Petersen final comments are about change in the parks, and long term development plans. “There needs to be a little more recognition that things are going to change. And you want to be in a position to guide that change and not just react to it.”

MARQUETTE – Frank J. Russell of Marquette, owner publisher of three U.P. newspapers, announced that Panax (owner and operator of various Michigan newspapers and broadcasting networks) will acquire the Mining Journal and two other daily papers in the U.P. Russell has owned and operated the Mining Journal since 1947, the Iron Mountain News since 1947, and the Escanaba Daily Press since 1954. Russell claims that one of the reasons for the transaction was to bring more vigor to the program, alongside a unification of the lower and Upper Peninsula. Panax board members are enthusiastic and dedicated to continuing to serve and involve themselves in the future of the U.P., and are optimistic about this acquisition. No changes in personnel or operating methods are being contemplated at this time.
