After World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic bereaved family members sought out mediums and fortune-tellers to speak to their dead loved ones. Spiritualism became popular, but so did fraudsters. One magician was not fooled, Harry Houdini set out to expose the ghost hoaxes. He used his stage show and a team of undercover investigators to collect proof of deceptions. The head secret agent was a New York private detective and disguise expert named Rose Mackenberg. Read about this little-know chapter in our American History.

Following the Civil War, the sisters were sought out to connect family members to lost loved ones, but were the sisters legitimate. Many including the media wanted to know the answers. This book covers insights in the Civil war era, women’s right and the news.

An Outbreak of Witchcraft: A Graphic Novel of the Salem Witch Trials by Deborah Noyes (Teen Graphic Novel Non-Fiction)

During the 1690’s fear was spreading throughout the town of Salem, Massachusetts. It started with 2 girls accusing their servant of witchcraft and it soon spread across the town. Many more accusations would follow, causing widespread panic and mistrust among the citizens. By the time the witch trials were over, more than twenty innocent lives were lost. This graphic retelling of the Salem Witch trials is a fantastic read for anyone who enjoys graphic novels and history.

Arcana: The Lost Heir by Same Prentice-Jones (Teen Graphic Novel)

Friends James, Daphne, Koko and Sonny have grown up together, surrounded by magic. They are part of the Arcana, a group of witches who protect the magical world. James is sent to investigate a strange event and runs into Eli. Eli never knew witches existed until now and finds himself in the world of Arcana. Soon after the 5 of them realize there is more sinister thing happening, that their parents’ death may not have been an accident and that the Majors, the people running Arcana, are more dangerous than they seem.
