MARQUETTE – Mike Springer was recently appointed to a two-year term on the board of directors of the Michigan Association of Computer-Related Technology Users in Learning. In his second year on the board, Springer is a tech-prep mathematics instructor at Marquette Area Public Schools. Established in 1975 and now with more than 4,00 members, MACUL brings educators together to share knowledge and concerns regarding educational uses of computers and technology. MACUL forms special interest groups to bring together members with similar needs, such as Computer coordinators, Elementary Education, Special Education, Multi-Media, telecommunications, LOGO and Technicians. Planning for MACUL ’96, “A Celebration of 20 years … Learn from the Past, Look to the Future,” has already begun.

MARQUETTE – A porch light campaign is being launched by the Marquette Chamber of Commerce to give the city a friendlier, better-lighted appearance, James Braddock, president, said today. “We are urging residents to turn on porch lights during the late fall and winter evenings and keep them on all night,” Braddock said. “This added light from each home gives a surprising atmosphere of friendliness and aids in safety in poorer lighted areas, especially with snowfall, making commuting often hazardous.” The porch light campaign will begin tomorrow night – Halloween – when thousands of children will be on the streets ringing doorbells for “trick ‘n treats,” and collecting for UNICEF. “Most people have 40-60 watt bulbs in their porch lights,” Braddock noted, “and if the lights were kept burning all night, it would cost the homeowner about one cent. Wattage in many of the porch lights is lower and the cost would be even less.” Residents in the Shiras Hills area have been keeping porch lights on for some time now, he added, and for those coming into Marquette from the west on U.S. 41, the city would have a uniquely lighted appearance.
