GWINN – The Gwinn Model Towners, who couldn’t hold on to a one-point lead in the final minutes of the fourth period of Saturday’s final game for both teams, gave way to a seven-yard touchdown run by the Gladstone Braves and lost, 12-7. The Model Towners had to put this one in the bag in order to have a game in the win column for the season, and they looked like they were going to do it. A combination of hard-nosed football and the right breaks kept both teams near mid-field during the first period, and then Gladstone slammed over a score late in the second period. Gwinn, playing tough defense all season, slammed the door on the extra point attempt, and went to the locker rooms leading, 6-0. Snow, mud, wind, and cold dominated play – eliminating passing almost completely, forcing teams to depend on the straight buck through the middle. Midway in the third period the Gladstone quarterback gambled on a pass to his right end at mid-field. Dennis Filizetti, Gwinn’s left safety, came up fast and grabbed the aerial on the run. He raced to the end zone for the score. Pete Castro carried the leather off left tackle for the extra point, and the score stood at 7-6, Gwinn, until late in the final period. Coach George McCormick said after the game that he felt his boys had played real fine football this season. He said the Calumet fans told him Gwinn gave them the toughest game of the season a week ago and felt with a few breaks, the Model Towners could have won a few ball games this season.

Starting at $3.23/week.
