MARQUETTE – Marquette General Hospital will have its 17th annual Halloween Blood Drive starting today and ending Oct. 31. The goal for this year is 600 units of blood either donated or pledged to donate. Everyone who donates or pledges to donate will receive a free coupon for a Big Boy sandwich. The blood drive will begin today at Blockbuster video. Participants will receive pizza and coupons for a free movie rental. The Halloween Costume Party Blood Drive will be held at the Blood center from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30. Q-107 will provide live remote coverage during the drive. Donors are invited to come in costume. Donors can also register for prizes from Marquette Mountain, Beth’s Kake Kreations, Jack’s IGA, Mister Donut, NMU’s Athletic Department, Tourville, Cookie Cutter and MFC First National Bank. Anyone between 17 and 80 years old can donate blood, as long as they are healthy and weigh at least 110 pounds. Donating blood is a simple, quick, and safe way to help someone who may need blood or blood products to live. According to Mary Hawn, supervisor of the MGH Donor Center, a donor should plan to take 20-30 minutes to make a donation. A nurse checks the donor’s pulse, temperature, and does a brief medical screening. This not only assures the blood is safe for the patients, but also checks the health of the donor. A single pint of blood can be used to help three different people, as it is divided into three main components: red cells, platelets, and plasma. A patient may need extra red cells to replace hemoglobin, which carries iron and oxygen through the body. A cancer patient may need platelets replaced after chemotherapy and open heart surgery patients may also need platelets to aid in blood clotting. Plasma, the fluid in which blood travels, is often used in emergency situations.
