MARQUETTE – A survey by the Marquette Country team Voice project at the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department indicates it’s harder for underage drinkers to buy alcohol in Marquette County than it was several years ago. In February 1993, an MCTV study found that underage drinkers were successful buying alcohol from bars, grocery, and convenience stores 45 percent of the time. A survey last month found the number had decreased to 13 percent. Project Director Sue Girard-Jackson credited the dip with better education among the sellers of alcohol and increased enforcement by police.

ISHPEMING – Members of the Ishpeming Rock and Mineral Club, Inc., will conduct a field trip into Western Upper Peninsula Sunday, meeting at the junction of Highways M-26 and M-35 west of Baraga. The area to be visited, a club spokesman said, is prolific with cutting and polishing materials, including chrysocolla, epidote, and datolite. This area is the same from which a number of stone hammers used by Indigenous copper workers have been recovered and it is hoped that one or two may be found by the rockhounds during Sunday’s field trip. Leading the group will be Elmer Jarvi, field trip chairman and a past president of the club. Many excellent fulgurites were found by club members during a September field trip in Marquette County.
