REPUBLIC – The “Pieces of Our Heritage Quilt Show” sponsored by the Republic Area Historical Society will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Republic Township Hall in north Republic. Admission charge will be $3. Featured will be many old and new quilts; the Quasquicentennial Celebration Heritage Quilt made especially for the 125th Anniversary of Republic will also be on display. The 30 squares of that quilt were made by 30 different residents of Republic Township, depicting historical scenes and stories of the area. The stories behind each square will be displayed with the Heritage Quilt. The idea of the quilt was conceived by Mary Lou Martin of Republic, a quilter and member of the Historical Society. The quilt has been entered in the quilt contest sponsored by the Good Housekeeping magazine and Land’s End Catalog. The name of the contest is “If Quilts Could Talk” and judging will be April 1996. Each displayed quilt will have signs naming the design, quilter, and date made. During the show there will be demonstration of various quilting techniques such as rotary cutting and speed quilting by Mary Lou Martin. Types of quilts, such as Log Cabin, Double Irish Chain, and Amish will also be displayed. Books and quilting supplies will also be on display. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited.

ISHPEMING – Coach C.C. Watson’s Ishpeming Hematites will face their hardest test of the season Saturday when they meet the undefeated Gladstone eleven in the Delta county city. The Ishpeming squad is undefeated for the season and has scored successive victories over Sault Ste. Marie, Marquette, and Negaunee. The Hematite mentor has been working his protégés hard this week in an effort to develop more scoring punch and has impressed upon them that they will have to put forth every effort if they hope to hold the Gladstone crew on even terms or chalk up another victory. Gladstone opened its season two weeks ago by trouncing Munising, 25-0, and followed it up with a 13-0 victory over the strong Manistique crew last Saturday. It is expected that the same lineup used against Negaunee last week will go into action on the Gladstone field.

Starting at $3.23/week.
