UPPER PENINSULA – Michigan environmental groups Thursday went to court seeking protection for pristine Lake Superior from toxic pollution, saying Gov. John Engler has refused to take the step himself. The suit filed in federal court in Washington, D.C. asks the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to designate the lake as an “outstanding natural resource water.” The suit was filed by the National Wildlife Federation, its Michigan affiliate, the Michigan United Conservation Clubs and Great Lakes United. The designation sought in the suit would mean an indefinite freeze on the amount of toxic pollutants allowed into the lake. About 70 pollutants would be covered. “Michigan’s laws are tougher than neighboring states’. The problem has been with Canada,” said Engler spokesman John Truscott. Van Putten said Engler promised four years ago at a meeting of the International Joint Commission in Traverse City that he would take swift action to protect Lake Superior by implementing a “zero discharge” zone. The commission is an association of Great Lakes states and Canada that cooperates on border issues.
