MARQUETTE — Three Upper Peninsula school systems and two other intermediate school districts will participate over the next 18 months in a program offered by Ameritech to provide enhanced access to the Internet. Ameritech will provide reduced Internet-access rates and fund a resource center and on-line help desk for teachers and students in the Stephenson, Menominee and Carney-Nadeau school districts and the Eastern UP and Dickinson-Iron intermediate school districts. A total of 14 school systems and intermediate school districts statewide are participating in the Ameritech program at a cost of about $2 million.

GWINN — A “new wrinkle” has been added to the proposed adult high school program at Gwinn. State Department of Public Instruction Representative Don Butcher told those attending this week’s meeting at Northern Michigan University that adult school programs will be completely covered by state aid, and therefore schools will not be able to charge adult students for taking courses leading to a diploma. This means that the Gwinn High School, in cooperation with Gwinn Community School Director James Ghiardi, will be able to offer courses making it possible for people who have left school for some reason to enroll, receive a high school diploma and not be charged tuition. When the program was announced last week, administrators here were not certain if tuition would have to be charged to make it self-sustaining.
