NEGAUNEE – Project Newborn has been chosen as one of “Michigan’s Best!” by the Michigan Association of School Boards. The program, a collaborative effort of the Ishpeming, Negaunee, NICE, Republic-Michigamme, Powell Township and Marquette school districts, was chosen as one of nine first place winners in the K-12 grade district category from more than 230 entries. Project Newborn’s motto is “The smartest thing you can tell your child is a story.” The program is a preschool informational and literacy project designed to assist families through the child’s early years and open a line of communication between the family and the child’s future school. The program focuses on reading as a means of strengthening the “parents are teachers” concept. Project Newborn provides the family with books each year until the child is school age. In addition, Project Newborn volunteers visit homes to introduce the program, to answer questions and to take suggestions. As a winner in the MASB’s 1995 Education Excellence Awards, Project Newborn will be the topic of a presentation at the Michigan Association of School Administrators/Michigan Association of School Boards conference Oct. 26-29 in Grand Rapids.
