MARQUETTE — Carriers on the Great Lakes moved 13.3 million tons of cargo in July, up 2.8 percent over the same period one year ago, according to the Lake Carriers Association. Iron ore shipments on U.S. vessels totaled 6.3 million tons, up slightly from July 1994. However, total iron ore shipments were 7.6 million tons, a decrease of 2.5 percent from the same time period last year. During the period, total shipments of western coal increased about 12 percent while shipments of eastern coal decreased by roughly the same percentage. Shipments of limestone, gypsum, cement, potash, liquid bulk and grains all increased while salt and sand shipments decreased. The association represents 14 operators whose combined rosters contain 59 ships on the Great Lakes.

MUNISING — Dan Malone, president of Local 96 of the Pulp and Sulphite Workers Union, and Wilfred Seglund, president of Local 87 of the Papermakers Union, revealed in a joint announcement today that contract negotiations underway the last several weeks at the Munising division of Kimberly-Clark Corp. have “failed to satisfy union demands” and that the company has been served with a notice of termination of the present contract. “Unanimous vote by employees of the plant gives the company until midnight Thursday, Sept. 9, to iron out differences with the two unions which represent 400 employees, or a strike will be called,” they declared. Kimberly-Clark officials here had no comment on the situation.
