ISHPEMING — The Republic-Michigamme and Negaunee school boards may be willing to join talks with the two other West End school districts, but only if discussion is about shared classes and services, not consolidation, officials said today. The Ishpeming-NICE Consolidation Committee decided last week to re-invite Negaunee and R-M to participate in the talks, which will now focus on joint classes and services instead of a full-scale merger. At last week’s talks, Ishpeming and NICE trustees outlined ways the districts could offer more joint classes and services. For example, they could share nurses, elementary guidance counselors, and a computer expert. And school year and daily schedules could be coordinated. Joint services could include food, transportation and bus maintenance.

ISHPEMING — Michigan State Highway Department Officials have decided that the cave-in in front of the Nat Belpedio residence here will be filled and capped, not merely fenced. Work will start next week on the project, State Rep. Dominic J. Jacobetti (D-Negaunee), 108th District, told The Mining Journal this morning. The cave-in area at the Belpedio home is owned seven-tenths by the highway department, while mineral rights beneath the ground are the property of the defunct mining company. Elmer S. Holmgren, Detroit, is trustee for former stockholders of that concern.

Starting at $3.23/week.
