PALMER — Two Richmond Township firefighters were slightly injured battling a suspicious 15-acre forest fire near Palmer, officials said. Firefighters responded at about 4:45 p.m. to the end of County Road MK in the Sands Plains area. They immediately called for assistance from the Negaunee Township and Forsyth Township fire departments and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Natural causes such as a lighting strike have been ruled out, said Terry Popour, Gwinn Forest Area fire supervisor. The fire apparently started in two different places, officials said. The fire started in a brushy bog, spread into a jack pine ridge and ended in a black spruce swamp, Popour said. About 10 DNR firefighters assisted dozens from the townships. The two injured firefighters were taken to Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming by Richmond Township EMS. Both were treated and released.
