PALMER — Two Richmond Township firefighters were slightly injured Sunday afternoon battling a suspicious 15-acre forest fire near Palmer, officials said. Firefighters responded about 4:45 p.m. to the end of County Road MK in the Sands Plains area. They immediately called for assistance from the Negaunee Township and Forsyth Township fire departments, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Natural causes such as lighting strike have been ruled out. The fire apparently started in two different places, officials said.

MARQUETTE– Epidemics of measles spreading through several areas in Upper Michigan and northern Wisconsin are not expected to affect the Marquette area. Dr. M. Cooperstock, city health officer, said today. Citing the large numbers of cases of red (hard) measles which were reported in the area this spring, Dr. Cooperstock said the disease reached epidemic proportions here several months ago, and only normal reporting of measles of this type are taking place now. According to Ann Holland, city health nurse, as high as 165 cases of the red measles were reported in Marquette at the peak of the spring outbreak, and the total number of reported cases came to “several thousands,” she said. Over 1,000 injections of gamma gobulin were given by the city to those whose doctors had ordered the shots for their patients, Miss Holland said. Late summer and fall are usually relatively free of serious outbreaks of communicable diseases, such as the measles, Dr. Cooperstock said.
