ISHPEMING — A chemical leak this morning at the water treatment plant in Ishpeming posed no danger to the drinking water supply for Ishpeming and Negaunee, said Ishpeming Fire Chief Ed Anderson. The Ishpeming Fire Department responded at 9:11 a.m. to the water plant because of a leak of about 5 to 10 gallons of sodium hypochlorite. The chemical is used to disinfect the water, said Tony McGrath, water plant manager. A tanker truck had just unloaded the chemical into a 3,500-gallon bulk tank, McGrath said, when a valve on the bottom of the tank that feeds the daily tank began leaking. Plant officials immediately notified the fire department and the Marquette County Local Emergency Planning Committee, A containment area was set up to prevent the leak from spreading to other parts of the plant. Sand was used to absorb the chemical. The cleanup, which was expected to take about two hours, was being handled by MJ Environmental of Marquette. There were no injuries.

MARQUETTE — Four changes in the traffic setup for Marquette were announced today by Chief of Police George G. Johnson. They are as follows; 1. prohibiting parking from the west side of N. Third St., between W. Arch and Bluff Sts., to enable smoother flow of traffic on the one-way 2. Making Blaker St. a one-way street with traffic flowing south only on Blaker, instead of north only (as the case until now) 3. Permitting right turns off N. Front St., into the Veterans Building parking lot (about 150 feet, but restricting inbound traffic beyond that point) 4. Providing angle (back-in) parking on the south side of E. Washington St., which last week was repaved and this week painted for parking.

Superiorland Yesterdays is prepared by the reference staff at the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.

Starting at $3.23/week.
