MARQUETTE – Many complaints have been received of the hazard caused between Marquette and the western end of the county by cattle grazing along highways, Sheriff Rudolph P. Franson said yesterday in announcing that steps would be taken at once to eliminate this danger to automobile travel. The sheriff said that in several instances motorists had reported their cars damaged when they struck cattle crossing the road. In one case, the sheriff said, a party of tourists from Illinois hit a stray cow and the car was badly damaged. There is no provision by law for the county or state to make good the damage; and these tourists said they would never return to Marquette county. Cattle grazing along the highways annoy motorists and visitors in the county, the sheriff said. He stated that officers would visit the farmers and explain that if they persisted in allowing their cows to run at large, the animals would be impounded. Automobile traffic is heavy in the summer and, with the upper peninsula seeking tourist traffic, everything must be done to eliminate highway hazards.
