MARQUETTE – Marquette General Hospital is continuing efforts to become more environmentally friendly with a corrugated cardboard recycling program that began in May. “As a major employer in the area, we are taking a larger role in the recycling effort. This is just one option we have, said Administrative Assistant Timothy Carlson. The program was developed after Carlson read an article in the Wall Street Journal about selling corrugated cardboard on the open market. Through the program, MGH is eliminating waste sent to landfills and saving the cost of tipping fees. Employees who don’t have curbside recycling in their communities are being encouraged to dispose of corrugated cardboard in the compactor at MGH. Carlson said the cardboard must be clean. “No plastic or Styrofoam can be inside the box. As this program gets up and running, we’ll probably get started on other recycling options.” Eventually, the hospital hopes to recycle newsprint and office paper.
