MARQUETTE – Parking at Marquette Senior High School will cost students $20 a year starting this fall, the school board decided Monday. The proposal, which passed unanimously, is an attempt to solve crowded parking conditions with a sticker program. With 500 parking spaces available for students, Superintendent Bill Bergin estimated the program would raise about $10,000 per year for the district’s general fund. At Monday’s meeting the board also appointed Manfred Tatzmann to replace board member Dr. John Weiss, who resigned in June. Carol Margrif will take over as board president. School board seats were also won by Patricia Lynott and Robert Martin. Along with Margrif, other officers elected Monday were Thomas Solka, vice president; Connie Mazzuchi, secretary; and Don Rudness, treasurer.

MARQUETTE – City firemen were called to help extinguish two fires in Marquette over the weekend, one yesterday, the other this morning. Two trucks (No 2 and No. 4 pumpers) and six men reported to Cliffs Dow Chemical Co. at 1:30 this morning, when a semi-trailer truckload of charcoal, waiting to be unloaded, caught fire. Spontaneous combustion was believed the reason, firemen said. The booster hose off the No. 2 pumper truck was used, and Cliffs Dow firemen laid a two-and-a-half inch line to fight the flames. City firemen returned to their stations at 6:15. Extent of the damage to the truck was not indicated. The Sunday fire resulted when flames from trash burning in an incinerator spread to the surrounding grass. It occurred at 4:30 p.m. at the home of Joseph Bruard, 232 Bluff St. and was blamed on the fact that the lid of the burner was not large enough to cover the opening. Crews from the No. 2 and No. 4 pumpers put out the fire and were back at the station by 4:43.
