Negaunee City Band to perform Wednesday
NEGAUNEE — A Negaunee City Band concert is set for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street.
The concert opens with “Oklahoma Selections,” including “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” and “Oklahoma.” Composer Richard Rodgers is also represented with an earlier ballad, “Blue Moon,” which has been a hit as performed by various artists.
“New Mexico March” and “The Minnesota March” by John Philip Sousa both have Native American themes. An English ballad is represented with “Variations on ‘Scarborough Fair.'”
Composer Norman Dello Joio received an Emmy award for his composition, “Scenes from ‘The Louvre,'” while composer Duke Ellington’s “Caravan” has been lauded for combining the styles of Latin and big band jazz.
“Black Tower Overture” depicts a foreboding castle rising above the jagged landscape and the subsequent battle to conquer it. On a much lighter note, “Ballet Parisien,” famous for the Can-Can, is a suite with several movements, including “Overture, Valse, Galop, and Finale.”
“Just a Closer Walk with Thee” is the concert’s concluding number.
