Negaunee City Band to celebrate Christmas in July

NEGAUNEE — This week, the Negaunee City Band will celebrate Christmas in July at their free concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street. In keeping with the Christmas spirit, the band requests that attendees bring items to donate to local food pantries.

A highlight of the concert will be Ishpeming Public Schools band director Ben Zindler performing Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Trombone Concerto.” A local composer will be represented when the band plays “Blue Christmas” as arranged by Brandon Nelson.

“Dashing through the Snow” is a merry romp through hills and fields based on “Jingle Bells,” while Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” is a familiar light orchestra standard. Rather ironically, “Ukrainian Bell Carol,” a popular traditional carol, will be followed by “Russian Christmas Music,” a medley of four Russian melodies.

There are several other medleys, also. “Three Songs for Christmas” includes “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella,” and “What Child Is This?” “A Charlie Brown Christmas” is a terrific medley of “Linus and Lucy,” “O Tannenbaum,” “Skating,” and “Christmas Time Is Here.”

The concert will conclude with “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” and the ever-popular “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
