SAWYER AIR FORCE BASE — The last operational air force base at Sawyer will close a month earlier than originally planned. The early inactivation, says Col. Regner Rier, commander of the 410th Bomb Wing, will allow more people to witness the deactivation process. The 410th contributed to the nations victory during the cold war, and more recently, sent 450 people from varying career fields to serve the U.N. during the Persian Gulf War. This early closure will have little to no effect on day to day conversion operations

ESCANABA — Commercial fishermen have been reporting mysterious slimes on their nets in the Bay de Noc area. One specimen has been submitted for examination to the State Water Resources Commission by Roy Jensen of Escanaba, secretary of the Michigan Fish Producers Association. The substances have been identified by Joseph Bal, Escanaba manager of the Upper Peninsula office of the Water Resources Commission, as a species of filamentous algae, most likely the genus “Meugeotia.” Algae are microscopic plant life, abundant in any body of water, and can be better seen when many are grouped together. Nets far off the shore of Lake Superior will get covered in slime growths, and algae will attach themselves to any material. All of the aquatic organisms which supply the food for fish populations are dependent on these algae for their cycle of food.
