MARQUETTE — The Marquette School Board passed a $25 million budget for the school year with $1 million of it in limbo, awaiting a Michigan Supreme Court decision. The court has established that the state cannot continue with its “pay as you go” approach to health benefits for employees. Instead, the court ordered the payments to be moved to a Retirement Fund Health Reserve to be made in advance, removing $294,000 from the district’s budget. Because of these delays, the districts budget will retire this year with a $48,000 balance. Superintendents and government officials are wary on how to move forward with the shortage in these funds.

ISHPEMING — Lost in the woods for three days and three nights, 38-year-old Mrs. Conrad Trosvig was found with her faithful dog Chum walking along a logging road. Mrs. Trosvig was in a state of shock, but was able to clearly remember her nerve-wracking experiences: After her husband left to fish upstream, she quickly became lost in the dense brush. Night fell and she became frightened by animal cries where she climbed a tree for safety and a place to rest. The next day, Mrs. Trosvig eventually found an unoccupied camp with food left by the last inhabitants. Her stomach too weak to eat, she left a note with her name and where she intended to walk if anyone returned to the camp. Mrs. Trosvig left with an old shirt, a can of sardines, matches, and a trail of bark behind her for navigation. When found, the first thing she asked for was water. Mrs. Trosvig says her hope never wearied, even at night when she saw what she thought were flares, illuminating the night sky with a red hue. When Chum came home, none the worse, his tail was still wagging.
