ESCANABA — A passing motorist, Darryl Fudala, saved the life of an Escanaba driver, Jody Williams, by pulling him through the window of his burning car after colliding with a train. Williams does not remember how the accident occurred, but pieces of the story have been put together by officials involved. Williams had been driving on K Road when he hit the engine of a 32 car iron ore train. As K Road has no lights or cantilever arms to warn motorists of trains, Williams hit the lead engine at 50 miles per hour, careening into a ditch after which the car burst into flames. Williams is in critical condition after being transported to the Marquette General Hospital. Without Fudala, police report that Jody’s life would not have been spared.
