SKANDIA — A class project in Skandia has turned into a yearly tradition known as the “Skandia School 5th Grade Free Press.” This student run press contains everything from interviewing and writing stories, selling and designing advertisements to local businesses, and payroll accounting that includes standard tax deductions. Carol Lamirand, teacher of the fifth grade class, began using newspapers in the classroom around three years ago as a tool to combat illiteracy. Students were motivated by this project in a number of ways: part of the $160 raised by the paper paid students two or three dollar salaries, and the rest for a pizza and pool party at the end of the year. Students also found that they were more excited for their futures by a sense of preparedness for college essays, and meeting deadlines for class.

MARQUETTE — Holy Cross Cemetery will be welcoming a new addition to its grounds. Lake States Construction Co., headed by Walter J. Meyers and Associates, is now in charge of building a new chapel. Rev. Thomas L. Noa, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Marquette, approved the projects after bids were taken and awarded to Lake States. The crypt beneath the previous chapel has been kept in order to build up from its foundation, and according to Meyers will be a semi-A-frame construction. A room will be included for winter storage of caskets with a house and office for the cemetery caretaker. Other amenities include a covered portico, paved drives, new landscaping, and a fountain near the main entrance. The project has an expected end date this summer.

Starting at $3.23/week.
