Superiorland History 6-6-25

June 6, 1995- ISHPEMING- Teal Lake has been closed off for swimmers for over one hundred years… until now! Teal Lake has been reserved as Negaunee’s designated water drinking source, but on Wednesday swimmers may now (legally) take a dip on the lake’s western shore. Two paid city life guards will be stationed at all times the lake is open, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The city is hoping to see a state grant that will provide sand along the beach and possibly in the water. More money is expected to be put into making the lake a spot for public recreation. Negaunee will hold a City Council meeting to see if opening the lake entirely to public swimming earlier than expected would be possible.

June 6, 1965- MARQUETTE- Capt. David H. McClintock of Marquette, after 35 years of service, has declared his retirement from the Navy. After his announcement, McClintock was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Most of McClintock’s service has been with submarines, which he commanded during World War II and beyond. His final naval duty was acting as the director of the Department of National Strategy at the National War College in Washington, D.C. Capt. And Mrs. McClintock will be moving to Marquette where they will live with family.
