New cell phone scam afoot
MARQUETTE — There is a new cell phone scam making its way across the state of Michigan, including right here in Superiorland.
According to the Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Township post, which has reportedly received several complaints from area residents, citizens receive a text message from someone claiming to be from the State of Michigan “DMV.”
Spl/Lt. Benjamin Eckola, MSP Eighth District public information officer, said the text message threatens legal action against the citizen and driver’s license suspension for failure to pay, with an associated link to pay the fees.
“The text messages are scams. Michigan does not have a DMV. The Michigan Department of State/Secretary of State will never ask people to send money or personal information via text message,” Eckola said in a press release to local media. “Do not click on the link or provide any additional information. Delete the text.”
