Negaunee City Band to welcome guest conductor

NEGAUNEE — This week’s Negaunee City Band concert will be led by guest conductor, Dr. Steven Riley, director of bands and assistant professor of Music at Northern Michigan University. The concert will be at the usual time and place: Wednesday evening at 7:30 at the Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street.

The opening march is “Forty Eight States,” while K. L. King’s “Pride of Arizona” will be played at the end of the evening. The world of film is visited with “Hollywood Jubilee” by Nacio Herb Brown, best known for his music featured in “Singin’ in the Rain.” “Song of Norway” was first a musical and then a film based on the life of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg.

Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story” selections include “I Feel Pretty,” “Maria,” “Tonight,” and “America.” Continuing the theme of

musical theater is Jerome Kern’s “Scandinavian Polka.”

“On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss” is based on the timeless hymn, “It Is Well with My Soul.” “Chant and Jubilo” is a very dramatic work which begins with a sensitive unison chant and explodes with brass and percussion.

The concert will conclude with the audience favorite, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”
