Negaunee City Band concert features young players
NEGAUNEE — Director Lucas Wickstrom has announced that this week’s band concert will feature young musicians in middle and high school from the Negaunee, Ishpeming, and NICE School districts. The band is hosting a mini band camp early in the week, and the youngsters will join the Negaunee City Band for several numbers as well as presenting a “Band
Camp Surprise.”
There is a change of venue this week. Because of the number of performers involved, the concert will be held at the Negaunee High School Auditorium on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., as usual. A special guest will be composer (and internationally renowned concert (pianist) Dr. Christopher Atzinger of St. Olaf College; the band will perform his composition,” Westward Expansion.”
This week’s marches include Sousa’s “Manhattan Beach” and “Second Connecticut March,” a composition from 1888 dedicated to the Second Regiment of the Connecticut Army National Guard. Also in this genre is “Bells of Freedom,” a patriotic march with quotes from “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
“The Gathering of the Ranks at Hebron,” an intense, vigorous work, was inspired by a Biblical event, while “Terracotta Warriors” refers to the “spirit army” of 6000 clay statues created for the tomb of the first emperor of China.
The group will also perform “Hollywood Serenade,” by Albert O. Davis, well known music educator and composer. “The Hounds of Spring” by Alfred Reed is a classic three part overture for concert band which opens and closes with a “rambunctious romp” and features a pastorale interlude.
As usual, the concert will conclude with “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”
