During the two days, Michigan residents and out-of-state visitors can fish, ride off-road vehicles, and visit state parks, boat launches, and other outdoor areas completely free of charge.
Free fishing this weekend includes all in-season species for both days without a license. All other regular fishing regulations apply during Three Free weekend.
ORVs can also be ridden without a trail permit or ORV license this weekend, and the state has over 4,000 miles of routes and trails on top of six scramble areas. Make sure to check for trail accessibility, closures, and safety information before heading out.
The DNR will also be waiving the state recreation passport to visit state parks this weekend. Vehicles will have free access to Michigan’s 103 state parks and more than 1,000 state-managed boating access sites, in addition to other outdoor areas.

“If you need another reason to get outdoors and explore some of Michigan’s best recreation opportunities, ‘Three Free’ Weekend is it,” said DNR Director Scott Bowen in a DNR press release. “There’s nothing better than spending time outdoors with friends and family in places you love, so we’re encouraging everyone to take advantage of these two days to fish, hit the ORV trails and visit our award-winning state parks.”
The Michigan DNR also encourages people to stay safe this weekend, not only to protect themselves but to protect Michigan’s woods, waters and wildlife. Information on outdoor safety, invasive species, and proper conduct on the trails and docks can be found on the DNR’s website at michigan.gov/dnr/education.
