May 14th, 1995 – MARQUETTE – A new book by Beverly Matherne, a noted Cajun poet and English professor at Northern Michigan University, will be released this month in New York City. The book, “La Grande Points,” is being released in a limited edition as a feature of International Poets and Writers Literary Arts Week in New York. Matherne’s book is the third in a series of books by noted Cajun poets to be published by Cross-Cultural Communications of Merrick, N.Y. and she and the two other poets will be featured in the book tour/festival. Matherne will be honored with poets Darrell Bourque and Sheryl St. Germain at a reception May 15th at Poets House, which will launch the week’s events.

MOUNT PLEASANT – Northern Michigan University’s golf team won the state title in the 1965 District 23 (Michigan) National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championships at Mount Pleasant yesterday. NMU’s golfers fire a 380 to win the team title by 16 strokes over a team from host Central Michigan University. Steady golf by the Wildcats five-man squad, who all played in the 70’s on the par 68 CMU course, won the crown.
